WHFS Head Start Program
What We Do...
Began in 1992, WHFS Head Start is an early childcare and educational program for children ages
3 to 5 from low-income families, federally funded by The Chicago Department of Children & Youth
Services (CYS). This comprehensive program promotes school readiness and access to free medical and
dental services while offering parents educational and training programs, such as project-based
support for fathers as caregivers.
Each - 3 ½ hour session provides daily health monitoring, periodic sight screenings;
an educational curriculum on the computer for basic math, word & spelling recognition, color
memorization, etc.; daily outdoor exercise; hot meal/snacks; reading time and positive social interaction.
Child developmental assessments are conducted quarterly through the "Creative Curriculum"
educational program to track learning progress.
Why We Do It...
Our program provides a range of individualized services in education and early childhood development,
addressing vital medical, dental, nutritional and mental health needs in order to holisticly focus
on the child's total well-being. Parent involvement is fostered in a variety of ways that are responsive
and appropriate to each child and family's developmental, ethnic and sociocultural experience to give
children the support they need to succeed in school and beyond. This is our WHFS commitment to 'Strengthen the Family and Build the Community.'
